Provider Frequently Asked Questions

Does my patient need a prescription?


No, Southwest Mothers' Milk Bank does not require a prescription in order to dispense to infants on an outpatient basis.


Does insurance cover the cost of milk?


Some insurance plans may cover some or all of the costs associated with donor milk through reimbursement. Families should be directed to contact their individual insurance carrier so they can determine what coverage is provided.


My patient cannot afford the cost of donor milk, what can they do?


Southwest Mothers' Milk Bank offers every New Mexico a one-time Bridge Scholarship that brings the cost of the first 40 ounces down to $150. You should also direct your patients who need additional financial assistance to email Southwest Mothers' Milk Bank at info@swmilkbank.org to inquire if additional scholarship funds are available.
